Every successful movie franchise will hit a brick wall. For James Bond, it was Licence To Kill with Timothy Dalton. For Star Wars, it is Solo. Franchises that don’t try to rebound from the brick wall, end. Just ask the folks behind Police Academy who thought Steve Guttenberg wasn’t a big enough star.
If you produce enough content, the audience may take a break. How you rebound is what matters. Unlike other franchises, Marvell would have multiple films a year, as well as shows. The Marvels was one movie too many for the audience, it was the MCU’s first flop. What Marvel and Disney was limit content to movies and television, plus they reloaded with a character they inherited after buying 20th Century Fox, Deadpool. Deadpool and Wolverine premiered their trailer on Super Bowl Sunday. It was a huge hit in front of the biggest television audience. The movie lived up to its hype and it is setting box office records everywhere. It had the biggest R-rated movie opening of all time. It’s also Disney’s lone MCU movie release for 2024.
It has helped reset Marvel and revitalize it. Captain America, Fantastic Four, and a couple of Avengers movies with Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom will help the MCU expand and stay for many years to come.
