Now That Curb Your Enthusiasm is off the air, I can’t find that next sitcom to watch. Nigh Court is cute, just not half as funny as the original. Same with Frasier and who says The Bear is an actual comedy?
Sitcoms today aren’t that funny. I’m not saying they’re politically correct, but unlike comedy of the past, it doesn’t want to be edgy.
Lately, I’ve been watching episodes of one of my top 10 shows of all time: Good Times. It’s still funny now, as it was back then. You probably couldn’t do a show about an African American family living in the projects. Still, I always loved the show because of John Amos and Esther Rolle and the show wasn’t the same when they fired John Amos and killed off his character, James Evans. As a white kid from Brooklyn, I enjoyed the show because of the goodness of the characters. Despite being poor and living in subsidized housing, they were still good and honest people, trying to scrape by. Just a shame they let JJ say Dynamite so many times, that Amos and Rolle complained about his character. Amos got fired for it and Esther left for a season. The show had legs and could have lasted 12 seasons if they just could have worked with John Amos and brought an African American writer or two to the staff. I met the cast of kids last year at an autograph show and they agreed that the death of James Evans was the most senseless in TV history. Still on Season 1 and I have a couple of more seasons before the show goes south, but even seasons 4-6 were better than most sitcoms on TV today.
